Clem, the 40-year old caretaker for a school of the deaf, decided after graduating that he didn’t want to leave the island the school is located on. He is constantly drawn to the causeway that connects the island to the rest of the world, but he can’t bring himself to cross it. He works hard on a daily basis, breaking only for fishing trips on Fridays and weekend visits from Bill, the campus historian and a retired teacher. But things change once his mentor and the superintendent of the school, Dr. McCord, passes away.
